Pronounced as POL-IP

Polyp (noun): (1) A coelenterate, such as a hydra or coral, having a cylindrical body and an oral opening usually surrounded by tentacles. (2) A usually nonmalignant growth or tumor protruding from the mucous lining of an organ such as the nose, bladder, or intestine, often causing obstruction.

I am due for surgery after my coming period. I have an endometrial polyp in my uterus.

You can read more about the condition here: http://www.mamashealth.com/women/endopoly.asp

It started very innocently as brown spotting after my last period. I ignored it, thinking that it was just dried leftover period blood. Being the optimist (or perhaps, simply in denial), I thought it was nothing serious and due to hormonal imbalance. I had some spotting earlier on in May and June and that turned out fine after a week of antibiotics from the GP. However, this spotting persisted and gradually worsened.

Yesterday, there were blood clots in my pee (which I only see when I have my period). The spotting was continuous and my period was not due for another week. Somewhere deep in my heart, I knew my body was sending me a message. But I am only 24. What could be wrong with me? Plus, I have a full schedule this week and there is no time for the doctor. So I decided to wait until when my next period is over. If the spotting continues, I will visit a gynaecologist.

Last night, I dreamt of my insurance agent. I woke up this morning and decided that perhaps this cannot wait. So I visited the gynaecologist today. I searched the internet and selected the first female doctor I found.

She performed a hysteroscopy and found the endometrial polyp. It looks something like this:

Polyp

The white arrow is pointing at the polyp. It is a small grape-like thing somewhere in my womb.

It is a minor surgery to remove the polyp and I will not be cut. However, I will be anaesthetised. There will be no hospitalisation and I will be out of work for 3 days. But this is going to cost me between $2980 to $4420; depending on the complexity of the procedure.

I am still having trouble pronouncing polyp and thinking how to translate this in Chinese to my parents .
