"I just came over to say I love your pair of red shoes."
Out of the blue, an ang moh VP walks over from the other end of the same floor to where I was. I was in the midst of sorting some files and was taken aback. Blushing, I mumbled a "Thanks!" and gave him a bright smile.
"You are a shoe person aren't you? But I still prefer your red shoes."
"Aiyah, he's probably married already. He is quite old you know!"
"He wears a pink tie? He's gay!"
Being the perennial optimist, I tried not to let these comments get me down. I felt a connection and his interest in me. It's not very often that a guy (or any person) will openly walk up and compliment my shoes. He did not give me a gay vibe and he did not feel married to me. I liked the way he smiled and the easy-going, confident charisma he exudes. He was not particularly good-looking (unless you have a thing for baldies) but I felt something naughty in him that was irresistible.
I met him a few more times in the elevator and along the corridor. Then, he relocated to a higher floor.
My mind thought that was the end of an office affair that could have been. Until Blondie.
Thinking back, it was quite amazing how I spotted him among the crowd. I was on the second level overlooking the stage. Near the end of the concert, I scanned the crowd and saw a familiar shiny bald head. (Note: There were quite a few baldies that night because Blondie is a 70s rock band and the lead singer is 61.) I squinted in the darkness and was positively sure it was him. He had the naughty smile and was thoroughly enjoying the concert. He also had a lady partner next to him. Well, I thought, "At least we know he's not gay."
I decided to be brave and messaged him on the office chat messenger. He confirmed that he was at the concert. We started chatting. He's 38 and not married. He said I was smart and stylish. He likes opinionated and passionate women. He has a dry and sarcastic sense of humour. He loves Black Adder.
Maybe the next time I feel brave again; I will ask him out for lunch.
